Hi @ikach
You need to drag’n’drop the Auxpecker.rhp file onto you Rhino window. Make sure that you have only one Rhino running at the time (and probably close/restart it afterwards). On a sidenote: I’m surprised to see Auxpecker is still a thing - I thought it had died many moons ago!

The version located in food4rhino is obsolete. You can obtain the latest version directly from developer’s website

Is there anything comparable to Auxpecker? I really loved using it before it became incompatible with latest Rhino versions.

I’m pretty sure it’s technology became antiquated as it was ā€œmergedā€ into Rhino 6 or 7 …

A whole bunch of things were merged since V5.

Auxpecker is like the actual library command.
In fact I’m still using it in Rhv8.
The way to do it is to unzip the installer and grab the environment map directly.
Unfortunately you will have to assign the maps by hand but still very useful.

what does that do that this can’t do?

I used to use auxpecker in V5.

I just see it as another plugin that became native Rhino.

I guess I just really liked the menu and how quickly it applied materials. It was well organized by material type. Rhino default material menu is just not as quick imo.

Secondly, I like that it just used the environment map for the shading. For quick shading, that’s all I needed. Results looked amazing.

@skysurfer Yes, I am aware. That’s my workaround now, too. I just have a series of actual physical spheres loaded in with pre-applied environment maps from Auxpecker, and I just match properties (via custom button) the model I am working on to the sphere with material. The plugin was better obviously…

Just wish there was something similar out there.

That physical button is just oh so satisfying to hit too… I would get a mini rush every time I pressed on it.

I think I should be able to wrap something up to replace it, and make it more generic.
The idea being, you can just browse to a folder and it will harvest the images. I’ve got this prototype working.

Just need to hook up dragging and dropping the content, and handling the creation of a material that creates an Emap material based on it:

I actually think double clicking the icon to apply should also work.

I remember that feeling. But I think the new stuff is basically the same thing, I just can’t quite discern the difference or if anything is missing. i’d have to load auxpecker into V5 again or something.

This sounds and looks awesome :beers: :sunglasses:

try: EmapMaterial on PackageManager.
command: _EmapMaterials
(also works on Mac but there the thumbnails don’t work nicely yet)
Usage: load a directory with subdirectories of Emaps and double click to assign to selected objects.
Warning: only briefly tested and might crash Rhino, so pls save your work…
No drag and drop yet
Double click will also add the material to the materials list, even if you don’t select anything
The latter is a bug, or a feature, you may choose

I got it loaded, what command do I type? :face_holding_back_tears:

:thinking:hmm

think I found it.

I think I have an old Auxpecker folder saved somewhere :slightly_smiling_face:

I knew I saved that folder all those yrs ago for some reason  :beers:

hmmm, just keeps crashing on my end.

I see it loaded correctly with the thumbnails, or does it now crash when you run the command to show the panel?
I thought I fixed the bugs that made it crash in the 0.1.4 version, but you might need to uninstall it from the packagemanager first.
Does it also crash in a new file?
In any case, back to the drawing table…

Yeah idk, I used an old file from the Auxpecker maps. It crashes when I drag n drop the map and or double click one.

The panel seems fine. I didn’t test that much though.

I’ll still have to do more testing.

I appreciate that. :beers: This is a cool thread, although I’m still not clear what Rhino has been missing from the Auxpecker version, maybe just the subtle interface button actions…

Hmm odd that it crashes when drag and drop as there is no real action coupled to that yet. I must admit I was a bit stingy with error checking code.

@lander I just uploaded 0.1.6.0, I hope that one works for you.
Looks better now with circularly cropped spheres

I downloaded new version to do some tests. I guess I didn’t uninstall the old one though…

Mine doesn’t look this cool though:

I’ll try loading those files I captured years ago . :innocent:

Not sure if there’s issues with the files I’m using though. I think theyre old Auxpecker images.

Ok so I loaded my secret folder with old Auxpecker images and looks like yours now:

:slightly_smiling_face:

Now imma test to see if no crash. :crossed_fingers:t4:

Ok so this time it didn’t crash. But the drag and drop seems to be locked, and the assignment didn’t take.

I tried ā€˜selecting object and double clicking material’.

Not crashing though.
