Aligning manually

Hi I am new to rhino and when I try to align stuff in wireframe mode there is no help from the ai. What I mean by that is, its all free movement, I like it to give me some reference as to how my objects align if that makes any sense?

You might want to look at things like Object snaps, Ortho, SmartTrack, gumball and perhaps the Align command.

Hi I looked up the smart track thing which looked helpful, however even tho I have it on when I click the single point tool I get no help? Is it bugged?

Hi @chrisbasmaci

No, not really. It would be easier if you describe/show what it is you are trying to do (“moving part A to the upper corner of part B” or something like that), so that we have a chance at helping you. There are a bunch of tools in Rhino to help you with the various types of alignment, distribution and orientation of objects, but the use of those tools depend on the specific use case. If you haven’t already, read and watch the small videos in the help file on things like SmartTrack, Grid, Osnaps, Gumball, Align, Distribute etc. Also the Level 1 tutorials are worth a visit, if you are new to Rhino - they go through the basic navigation and modeling tools (Help>Learn Rhino>Tutorials and Samples).

Hi I managed to use object snap after I selected the single point tool than tools, object snap and center. I put a dot on the corner of two meeting sufaces. I also have a cylinder, I would like to put the center of my cylinder on the dot I just made. I tried putting a dot in the middle of the cylinder and snapping the two dots but now smart snap doesnt work cause my cylemder isnt a point.

Hi @chrisbasmaci
Look at the osnap called Center, but beware that you need to move the cursor to the edge of the object you want to center snap to - in this case the edge of the cylinder. Start the Move command, select the cylinder as the object to move (and press Enter to end the selection process), now make sure that you have the Center osnap turned on and move the cursor to the edge of the circle making up the end of the cylinder - the cursor should snap to the center of the cylinder and a little tool tip should inform you that it’s snapping to the center (Cen). As you can see in the video, I have a lot of the Osnaps turned on most of the time when modeling, and only turn them off if they get in the way - but that’s a matter of taste and you’ll find out if you prefer them on or off as you go along.
