Just like the Dynamic option in the fillet tool (see discussion: Feature request: Real time (curve) filleting preview mode), there should be a dynamic option in the chamfer tool. There could be two modes: an equidistant mode and a mode that lets you set the distance dynamically from either end of the chamfer. For the latter it might be nice to go back and forth between one end and the other.
