Wish: Better SubD tools

only Shift does not work for selection, you need Ctrl+Shift

If I do not set the SelectionFilter > Sub-objects, and hold the Shift and Ctrl keys, the SelBrush > Crossing command selects entire SubD rather than its faces/sub-objects.

please send us cases with step to reproduce, we are keen to see cases that fail.

In Modo hit “Shift+G” and it will pick the polygons in-between.

To fill in the box hold “Shift +Ctrl”…

While Modo’s community isn’t raging like say Blenders or zBrush, there is a strong community that is still using it daily. There are posting in both the Slack and Discord groups daily. The Japanese’s Modo group is also quite strong. In the end it comes down to your personal workflow and while I use just about everything under the sun, Modo’s modeling is still my fav.

Overall Rhino’s SubD modeling is ahead of most other CAD packages which is to say that, as a whole, it’s a good start. There is much to be desired modeling wise that could be a bit more UI focused that brings out some of the “hidden” capabilities more to the front.

The quick paint selection methods that @hannesgrebin demonstrated in Modo is amazing to use. It also remembers what’s been selected depending on which mode you’re in. (Vertex, Edge, Polygons). And I dare say that it really took a while but one thing in Modo that’s universal is that if nothing is selected then everything is.

It would be nice to be able to add less icon driven button clicking and add in some more onscreen UI options. The more that you can keep your model on the screen in the main window the better. Not sure if any of you have taken a look at Plasticity but this approach is going directly at the heart of evolving CAD modeling.

Plasticity - Modeling example

SubD selection, and even specifically Paint Selection has been explained and discussed multiple times here for the 8+ years MCNeel has been developing SubDs.

Herés one of my gripes and frustrations with paint selections: Basic polygon selection is painful, slow, unreliable. Example attached - #19 by RIL four years ago. Still no improvements in sight.

Also keep in mind Modo had this working on Modo 1.0. That entire product reach 1.0 being developed in less than 5 years by a very small team. Almost as long as we have been complaining about selection in Rhino. So that argument at McNeel of “Those SubD modelers have been doing this for soooo many years that’s why we are still not there”… I don’t buy it anymore. That excuse expired a long time ago. Rhino is no longer a new-comer to SubD. It should have a much more mature toolset and workflow than it does today IMO.

Also, Modo went pretty much out of business already. It’s undeniably dying. It’s a sad story of an amazing team acquired (good for them!) by a bunch of incompetent morons (bad for the users, and ex-users like me). Meanwhile McNeel is doing jus fine. So SubD modeling might not be a lucrative business move after all. And them offering just a SubD topology support in their environment is a very useful and welcome feature for people that model in other professional SubD tools.

Sure, the next time I work with SubD and face such an issue, I will post an example here.

Just my 2 cents… “CAD” companies… Dassult, Autodesk, McNeel, Siemens all think like CAD programmers. You’d think at least Autodesk shouldn’t get a pass because they have everything under the sun in their portfolio but alas they suffer from the same deal. SubD to them has been kind of an after thought and none of them have added SubD modeling in way that’s ahead of the curve. They’ve mostly implemented where SubD modeling was 10 years ago with some slight bumps here and there.

If any of them were using 3D Coat, zBrush, Maya, Modo…the list goes on, full time they’d start to get into the mindset of what really needs to happen when it comes to SubD tools and UI that are needed today. This isn’t to say that there won’t be progress but it will take time. I’d like to see Rhino add brushes for SubD but then again that’s an method of modeling that is, if even being considered, something they add 2 - 3 years from now if at all.

Lastly… While Modo isn’t being driven by Brad anymore I will say that the team has recently made a huge shift that will, hopefully translate to a nice uptick. While I don’t use any software because of it’s popularity, I will say that it’s not yet dead. Hell… Blender was always in the back seat to everyone until EEVEE dropped and then everyone started jumping on their bandwagon. Never count anyone out until the towel is thrown in.
