Version 6, (6.4.18114.15591, 4/24/2018), Commercial
Rendered and Raytraced display modes look the same. Raytraced info shows non-default (blue) but has 1 entry, “None.” Am I missing something?
Looks like it, yes.
This is what that page should look like:
What happens when you hit the Restore Defaults button at the bottom?
Restore Defaults just turns off the blue, display engine still “None.” Just checked, I don’t have a RhinoCycles plug-in. I’ll try a download and or repair. Hmmm. All worked fine prior to latest update. Many Thanks. @wim
You mean there is no RhinoCycles plug-in at all? Not just not-loaded?
That’s correct @nathanletwory Probably best to download again and install latest.
Let us know it that helps
Will do! Thanks
@nathanletwory @wim
Repair fixed the missing RhinoCycles. Now choosing Raytraced, current viewport flashes and goes black; If I select objects in another viewport they display as the yellow selected in the black viewport. I can move them around as they display (yellow) in the black field; changing the display via dropdown(R-click vp title)will change accordingly, but on the next mouse click, focus goes to black vp and hangs. I compared WIP 7 and it works as expected. So…I need to do a little more peeking.
Thanks again gentlemen.
So, the Raytraced display mode works for the same model on Rhino 7 WIP but doesn’t on Rhino 6?
Can you post the result from the Rhino SystemInfo
command, both for RH7 and RH6?
Probably a good idea to ensure the settings between the two are the same. In the advanced section (Tools \Rightarrow Options \Rightarrow Advanced) type RhinoCycles
in the filter. A screenshot of both with only modified entries showing would be useful.
OK so the plot thickens…WIP 7 expired since last post and I updated to new WIP (Rhino WIP, 7.0.18107.5125) This WIP now has the same problem as V6.
@nathanletwory V6 & V7-WIP RhinoCycles, filter for modified entries, both return blank; no entries.
I found (via restore point) a copy of RhinoCycles.rhp, dated 3/13/2018, which would have been from the initial WIP7 that displayed Raytraced correctly; no black viewport. I’m tempted to back up the current RhinoCycles.rhp and replace it with this 3/13/2018 version. I don’t want to mess anything up, but Is that worth a try?

@Fred_C can you try setting RhinoCycles.UseDrawOpenGl
to false if it isn’t already (in the Advanced section).
Note that the GT 230M won’t be accelerating Raytraced, the architecture used is too old, not supported (Fermi was oldest, and is slated for removal as well, making Kepler best choice for lowest-end).
Nathan,
Thank you for the quick response. That change gives me a raytraced display, but it is very slow. Looks like it’s time to get some new hardware.
Best regards, Fred
Not sure why it worked with older versions, clearly something changed. But indeed, the GT 230M won’t be used - you should see under Tools \Rightarrow Options \Rightarrow Cycles that the CPU is selected.
The technical reason for your black viewports is that the OpenGL version your card supports causes the viewport to draw black. Setting the UseDrawOpenGl to false ensures this code path isn’t taken, rather a software approach is used to get Raytraced
results to the screen.
I appreciate the information, Nathan. Yep, time to upgrade. Thank you!
I have a Nvidia GTX1070 and this behavior IE: Black Viewport with Raytraced is happening. Making UseDrawOpenGL false makes it render but slow. In Tools>Options>Cycles the GeForce GTX 1070 is checked under the CUDA Tab. So is the Nvidia GTX series not supported for OpenGL rendering with Cycles in Rhino6?
@Nvizeon Please post the results of the Rhino command _SystemInfo

OpenGL version is reported as 3.3, for Raytraced to draw with OpenGL you need at least 4.0
Do you have your card set to work as core profile or are you running under virtualization?
Hmm not sure what you mean by “set to work as core profile” and not I’m not running under virtualization. Windows 10 and installed the latest Nvidia Driver.
