What method to bring top toolbar custom buttons into V8

Hi,
I somehow managed to get my custom buttons from V5 into V7, however not sure how it was done,
I could take them from V7 into V8, that might be less likely to fail.

How is it done ?

Cheers

Steve

…anyone know how to get custom buttons into V8 from V7 ?
surely it must be possible ?
or has V8 broken such ?

Steve

Hi Steve1,

Here are the instructions for importing a toolbar from previous versions.

https://wiki.mcneel.com/rhino/home/rhino8importrui

Hi,
It says import the rui, it doesnt say what a rui is and how to make it. or where it might exist.
says see help, I do and I am totally lost,
Cant see anything clear about how to take a custom button from v7 to v8.

what are the exact steps please 1 2 3 4 to do so ? starting with a V7 file open.

Cheers

Steve

If you want to save your default.rui file between your mutliple computers or in a single computer between Rhino 7 and Rhino 8, you can:

  1. Open Rhino 7 > go to the Tools menu > Options… > Toolbars page

  2. Select default under Files

  3. Go up to the File menu of the Options box

  4. Select Save as… > and save it in your computer (I would also rename it to something different than default.rui)

  5. Open Rhino 8 > go to the Tools menu > Options… > Toolbars page

  6. Select default under Files > and select Close it in the File menu of the Options box

  7. Go up to the File menu of the Options box again > click on Open

  8. Browse to search for your custom default.rui (however you renamed it).

Now you should have your group of toolbars, with the icons you edited/customized between V7 and V8.

The reason for renaming the defautl.rui file is that when you reinstall Rhino, it could replace your custom defautl.rui with Rhino’s native one and you could loose your tools. So renaming is a healthy practice. BTW, we store the default.rui in this location, C:\Users[USER NAME]\AppData\Roaming\McNeel\Rhinoceros\7.0\UI.

Hi,
@Japhy
the V7 went ok with ‘default’ being highlighted in blue, hiwever it in fact said
default RhinoV7 SR custom buttons
and that was in blue, no basic default wording existed. and it was blue from the outset,

and the save was all ok.

…but V8 sees a dead end as default is not apparent selected and close is greyed out.

Keen not to have any user caused issues in V8 so why is this not playing ball ?
or can one ignore that part of the proceedings ?

and this will bring in my custom buttons I made on the toolbar, just to check again ?

Cheers

Steve

@Steve1

You are expecting V8 to be like V7 or V5 in the way it handles toolbars and .rui files. It is not. The system has completely changed.

  1. There.Is.No.Default.RUI What was a separate file that contained all the default tools/toolbars in V7 in earlier is now integrated directly in Rhino - there is no .rui file to do anything with and as such you cannot close or unload it. All you can do is simply turn all those toolbars off (if you don’t want them).

  2. If you have a set of custom tools from V7 or earlier stored in an .rui, you can open that in V8. Suggest you make a copy of the V7 .rui file and put it in a different place, don’t reference the original. Then from the menu you show above (Options>Toolbars), choose File>Open and open your .rui. The toolbar and tools will then be available in V8.

  3. Note that some V7 and earlier tools may not run correctly in V8 - you will need to check. V7 and earlier buttons have bitmap images, V8 buttons have vector images. You should still be able to see the V7 bitmaps in V8. There is some ongoing work on the buton image editor at the moment.

I just went through the steps provided above with no issues (a simple example)

Hi , I wasnt expecting anything the same,I had heard V8 was different yet again.
Japhy posted how to get custom from V7 to V8 and I was following it, but it derailed at step 6.
so not exactly the method.
but then sounds like step 7 onwards will do it.
I had already in steps 1 to 4 saved out my own named rui as it and you suggest.
so step 7 onwards should then bring my custom buttons in. ?

I recall making the artworks (and enjoying doing so, in some small pixel editor)
you say such raster buttons wont work, its now vector.
so what will happen to them ?
Is there a vector editor to redo the artworks ?
How will I know which is which ?

japhus post then seems sort of redundant.

is it best to remake them all over again and place the code into them thats no problem.

what is best, start all over again with the custom buttons and custom button editor or try and pull rasters into vectors ?

gut feeling start all over again.

so where is this custom button editor now ?

I am on about these tools top row, will this screw up V8, is it best to use the new vector editor ?

need the averageCurves tool so back in V5 where it exists at the mo.

@Helvetosaur
Hi,
How do I create a .rui in V7 of my custom tools buttons ?
then I can get these into V8 you say.

Steve

@steve1, what I would do is similar to the steps Japhy described, but I’d make a custom rui in Rhino 7, then copy the buttons you want to port over to Rhino 8 to that toolbar.

If you can send me your customized rui file, I’d be happy to have a look at it to help you forward

here’s a short video of the process.

For getting better quality icons you’ll need to redraw you icons though. In Rhino 8 there is an SVG editor that allows you to draw vector icons. Text is not yet part of the set of drawing tools.

Hi,
@Gijs
I follow the video carefully.
options toolbar new, name it my_custom_toolbar_RhinoV7
then ok,
I get the single size toolbar light blue lower right, drag it up screen and pull it wider, all as per video.
I go to my first custom button and click drag to that toolbar and nothing will drag out to it, not even the help button the video first does.
Nothing will drag out.
Whats wrong here ?
How else do I get my custom buttons out and into V8 ?

Steve

Use either the ctrl key or shift key to modify how the click/drag behaves when you mouse down.

hI
@Gijs
OK done that now, wish vid had shown ctrl for frag onto, and shift works to drag that first blan one out and delete it.

here is the .rui as you asked for.
my_custom_toolbar_RhinoV7.rui (57.4 KB)

In V5 Pascals scroll back created objects crashes V5. it worked once upon a time. some update perhaps rendered it dodgy.

Steve

So now you can go to toolbars in Rhino 8, then choose File > Open, and should be set to go and use them. They will be blurrier than the native Rhino 8 for obvious reasons.

Hi,
done that and then the video ceased, but as I want them on the standared toolbar and with no video show on how to do that, I have held down shift (as ctrl does a copy drag) and dragged the first button onto the standard toolbar, then repeated that for each one, ending up with an empty floating toolbar. which I clicked on the red x on its top right corner and closed it.

was that the correct way ?

Steve

You can do this, yes.

Thank goodness for that, one more hurdle over, after I find out how to create the artwork for a button, using the NEW way which apparently is a WIP, and not available yet ?
so use the old way then , but how .

Steve

There is a SVG editor that allows you to draw lines, polylines, rectangles, circles and ellipses in Rhino 8 release.
