V8 (Bug) - UV Maps not exporting using *fbx format?

Hi I’ve not see this reported yet but I’ve just opened an old RHV7 file in RHV8 and made some client requested changes.

I then exported the file using my previous RHV7 *fbx settings and imported it into Twinmotion.

When I opened the file in Twinmotion, the UV maps I’d applied in RHV8 did not come across as they used to from RHV7. ie, the box UV mapping is not scaled or orientated correctly.

To double check the results, I opened the older RHV7 copy of the file and made client changes, re-exported as *fbx and re-imported into Twinmotion. All UV textures came in without any issue.

Any thoughts?

Cheers
M

Try the Rhino 8.1 service release please from https://www.rhino3d.com/download/rhino-for-windows/8/latest/ There have been some FBX mapping bug fixes recently that may solve what you’re seeing. Any luck?

Many thanks Brian - I’ve downloaded but can I check one thing before I install. If I install this will I loose the toolbars / UI customisation I’ve set up and if so, is there anyway I can get them back? ie I’ve created a custom toolbar with all my regularly used commands (took ages) and I’d rather not have to do that again until RHV9…:-))

Hi Martin -

You should be updating to a new SR several times during the lifetime of a major version, and this should never lead to loss of customizations.

Many thanks Both - Its nearly fixed the issue but not quite:

I’ve updated RHV8 to the latest SR1, created some elements, and applied and adjusted a ‘box, cylinder and flat plane’ UV maps to those objects before exporting as an *fbx.

I then re-imported the *fbx back into RHV8 and it looks like the ‘cube and flat plane’ UV maps are working but the ‘cylinder’ is not?

I’ve attached working files here - any thoughts?
UVMap_Test.3dm (2.4 MB)
test2.fbx (2.1 MB)

Use the command ConvertExtrusion on the cylinder. The render mesh for extrusions is super simple and doesn’t have enough density. After that, show the cylindrical mapping widget and make it just a little bit taller so the end of it isn’t right at the top. This should fix it.

UVMap_Test.3dm (2.6 MB)
Brick.fbx (74.5 KB)

OK many thanks - at least I can start using RHV8.

Interestingly it used to work with RHV7 without this work around - why the change??

I’m glad that helped. I don’t see a difference in Rhino 7 after saving your file back to v7 and exporting an fbx there. The extrusion object render mesh issue is still present but otherwise appears the same as Rhino 8.1 here.

Sorry what I meant was that a simple cylindrical map applied to a simple cylinder in RHV7 kept its UV mapping when exported as an *fbx (at least in my experience) but it seems the cylinder doesn’t have enough mesh density in RHV8. No problem, at least its sorted. Many thanks again.
