Unwelcome changes

But there are significant changes to the UI, at least in the Mac version.

Here’s an example:

The visual presentation of the tool sets is too compacted:

In V7 they’re better placed and easier on the eyes.

No new features perhaps, but certainly a removal of some.

So long ‘commands, themes, and tool palates’

In V8:

This was all done with the intent of unifying the UI from mac to pc. Surely there will be folks who do not like this, but the majority of our educational customers, especially teachers have been requesting this for the entirety of the mac development cycle. Teaching two separate UI in an integrated classroom was a bridge too far for them.

Not to mention unifying the Rhino code base as far as possible to avoid a huge amount of double development…

I understand that but why is it necessary to degrade the users ability to make the app work for them?

I don’t know about the windows version but has it always been less easy to customize? That seems unlikely doesn’t it? Does the windows version not provide the command customization as well? Is there some reason to remove the right mouse button menu extents? Wouldn’t it be better to extend it to Windows?

Look, I’ve dipped my foot into coding and I fully understand the tangled nightmare that can easily arise attempting to build an interface so I’m not intending to come off as ungrateful, but…

Far easier to customize…

Then please - McNeel, help the Mac users transition instead of obliging them to go on an adventure trying to regain the functionality they had up until now.

In principle, all that functionality should still be there, it’s just in different places now…

This was a huge issue for me and my Architecture class in 2015, I remember creating a mac specific presentation as the University only taught us on Windows, glad to see it unifying

So how does one return the options displayed with RMB as shown?

Again, I’ve no issue with unifying the interface - in fact I think it’s the most optimal way forward. I may be obliged to use the windows version in future so the easier the change of OS the better.

Sorry my point was a bit unrelated, I just hadn’t realised others had had the same issue in education.
Your points all seem valid to me, it’d be handy to have a transition guide.

r.e this menu though, I believe you can get all these options by right clicking the viewport label or clicking the little down arrow.

Yep, you’re right. Now I can mouse over and click on the view thing instead.

Thanks for the tip. But still, it’s not as efficient as before right?

I used Rhino 5 on Mac (A long time ago), 6/7 on Windows and now I’m using 8 on both so I couldn’t say, I’m mostly still confused by the command line on mac, but clearly it is less efficient for you.

I’m pretty confident that whilst there are some road bumps in the UI transition McNeel is scouring the forums for these posts and they’ll all be solved, and ideally configurable so everyone is happy :stuck_out_tongue:

Just add a right click option for all. Treat the windows users! Still unified UI.

It’s so inefficient to move from where you are working to the viewpoint display drop down. I know, I know… shortcuts but then you leave the sub d toggle / selection hand position to do that.
