UI question about contrast [dark mode] Can't see highlights!

I am recording Rhino training and the dark UI is giving me a unpleasant ‘invisibility’ issue. In the dark mode, the menu selection highlight is almost invisible.

Look carefully. My cursor is actually on the command ‘Twist.’

Q1 > Is there a setting to adjust in Rhino?
Q2 > If it’s a ‘windows thing,’ how do other apps control this?

@theoutside @BrianJ

I’m stil looking for a simple Rhino fix to my menu selection highlight. Any suggestion from the McNeel nerds?

I did find where you can can adjust it through windows, but it’s not very elegant. In Windows 11, you have to change the ENTIRE theme to high contrast version, under Settings > Personalization. In the example image, I’m using the ‘Night Sky.’

I can imagine this would confuse people more than help them. :ok_hand::sunglasses::+1:

OK, I might have to punt and just use the Rhino LIGHT mode for everything. The menu highlight is not much better, but it is better.

I sure would love a way to control / fix this.

the pink color is what you are trying to change?

Yes, yes, yes! You got it.

See the first pic of the dark mode, showing minimal contrast in the menu item highlighting. You may have missed it … because everyone misses it!

If this app were a web-page, it would be called the ‘hover’ color. :+1:

Here is a great example. The selected layer and current viewport are both a lovely blue accent. Love it! :smile:

The menu Transform > Twist has ‘very light gray on slightly darker gray.’ Bad … and not enough contrast. :slightly_frowning_face:

Hi @schultzeworks ,

I believe the only way to change the menu item highlight color is via the Windows settings > Personalization > Colors > Contrast Themes… which you also discovered. The Aquatic one isn’t too bad IMO…

Unfortunately, and unless I’m mistaken, you can’t directly control this color via Rhino’s options. There are a number of ui color paint advanced options but none of those appear to be what you need here. I’ve filed https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/youtrack/issue/RH-83123 as a feature request though and perhaps we can add the ability in the future.

Thanks, @BrianJ

I’ll do some more expermenting on this. it seems odd that BOTH light and dark schemes have such low contrast on the command hover.

Q1 > Any idea how long these things take to get addressed?
Q2 > Is there any code-hack you are aware of I could get developed?

The devs don’t let me set their priorities :sweat_smile: so I can’t say when or if it will get looked at soon. It might also be something that is not easy to change despite it appearing to be an easy change.

I don’t know of another method to control this UI color value, sorry.

Hi @schultzeworks

I think the old white scheme is easier to read and causes less eye strain.
White on black produces too much white color haloing around text which makes it much harder to read than black on white which does not produce that effect.

I can’t believe UI designers think they can use low contrast and not expect people to have problems with it. For me and my aging eyes dark themes are not that easy to read when low contrast is used. For me the white screen though less contrast on the menu is still more noticeable than the dark screen version.

Hey, no problem … never hurts to ask.:sunglasses:

There are other areas of the dark mode that also need serious attention. I like the overall look and feel, but I can give you lots of example of elements and icons that are borderline un-readable.

The color system in general is a rather big project. It is a high priority to tune up, but I wouldn’t expect anything in the next few weeks.

@3dsynergy

I totally agree.The lighter “classic” color scheme is what I will use for now. I need to start work on multiple courses and cant wait!
