The mouse click does not select lines/surfaces

When I use the mouse click to select a line or surface it does not select it.
It only selects when I drag a rectangle around the element.
Additionally, when I click on a sketch of a closed shape it selects individual lines and not the entire shape.

Do you have the selection filter active with “subobjects” checked by any chance?
