Frustrated. I feel like a beginner again

I am suddenly no longer able to select planar surfaces of say the end of a tube. I can no longer make this work with any solid like a box or a cylinder either. The same with trying to select an edge.

I thought all I had to do was right click on the surface or edge. All that happens now, is that my last command gets repeated. I can’t figure out what I am doing wrong.

I am suing Rhino 8.

This really demonstrates “use it or lose it”. I use Rhino so infrequently these days, that I really am a rank beginner again.
