Text command has varying bugs

When using the Text command to add text to a document, occasionally it doesnt work. For example I will open a new file and go to add text, I type the text and click Ok and nothing shows up in the command prompt and there is no text object attached to my mouse pointer. The only solution to this issue to to close and reopen rhino. Another issue I will have occasionally is when I have already added a piece of text then try to add another. I open the text command and the previous text is in the text box. I then change the text to my desired text (and sometimes change the font or size) and when I go to add it it is still the previous text that was present when I first opened the text box. The solution to this problem occasionally is to add the previous text again and then edit it in the properties side bar or sometimes if you add it then delete it then open the text command again it will work as intended. The first bug mentioned happens much more frequently than the second. Any insight is welcome.
Thanks

Hello -

Please run the SystemInfo command in Rhino and copy/paste the results here.

@joshrudesill - I see this has been reported here internally as an intermittent bug, but the developer cannot reproduce it so far.

-Pascal

Aside from your issue, it looks like your Nvidia driver is almost a year old. Maybe time for an update?

Is there any way I can help if I manage to reproduce it on my machine?

@mary - were you able to reproduce this reliably?

-Pascal

@pascal and
I have not been able to come up with a “step by step” to repeat for the developers.
For me, it happens when I have more than one instance of Rhino for Windows open, and it does not happen every time, and it does not happen immediately.
Always closing all Rhino’s and restarting solves the issue.

@joshrudesill
Did you update your drivers? Do you have a “step by step” that I can try here?
If we can repeat it, then we can fix it.
So let me know if you can share how you reliably repeat this issue. And I will give it a try.
I have already logged the bug, but since it was not repeatable, there is no action yet.

And images and screen capture of these issues would also help.

Sincerely,
Mary Ann Fugier

We have been trying to replicate it. I did update my drivers though. The multiple instances is something we will try. We also are possibly thinking our toolset (C# RhinoCommon) may have something to do with it. Because when it happens for us it happens session wide and yes, restarting rhino immediately solves it. I will keep you updated if we find anything

@mary @pascal I have the bug working right now in my current instance of rhino. Is there anything I can do to give you info about it?

Ok, I can make this occur on my machine reliably.

I’ll get a video together shortly

Rhino 7 Commercial - [Top] 2021-08-09 10-00-38.zip (4.4 MB)

Here is the recording of the steps.

Note that each time i clicked the text button from the toolbar, I typed four letters aaaa, bbbb, cccc, …
using the next letter in the alphebet each time.

The textbox dialog is not showing up in my videos, but the steps are the same:

  1. open fresh rhino
  2. use the text command as shown in the video
  3. type text, and place
  4. open new file
  5. repeat step 3

Rhino 2021-08-09 10-12-45.zip (11.1 MB)

This one shows the text dialog, but for some reason is choppy as heck. Same process as the previous post though

@joshrudesill
Is yours the same at @mrflat8 is reporting?

@mrflat8
Thank you for the screen capture videos.
I can duplicate it and I am logging it now.

I would help to also get your to type SystemInfo in Rhino, copy the results in your reply.

I have seen a similar bug that the text command stops working, does not appear at all, until I restart Rhino.

I am not sure if you have experienced it. I have run into it about 3 times in the last couple months, and can not repeat it. Let me know if you see that one as well.

I will post YT details soon!
Thanks again for all the details and videos.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Fugier

Yes this is the same bug I was reporting. This is half of it at least. The other half is the same one youre referring to where nothing appears when you hit ok.

Hi @joshrudesill and @mrflat8,
I have logged RH-65253 Text Input Stalls Out at Previous Input for the developers to review.
It took 3 instance of Rhino to get this issue to trigger, @mrflat8 had only one that I could see, but the other instances may have been hiding.
Some threshold is being crossed here, where Rhino will not take any more input.

Until the is reviewed by the developers, it will remain private. However, the developer may decide to open it up for public view sometime later.

Still watching for bug #2 where there is no point picker to insert the text with. Let me know if you have any procedure/video to help me repeat that issue. It is worth gold, when we can repeat it reliably. The videos are very helpful.

When there is a fix in a service release, you will be notified here.

Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Fugier

I only had one instance open for both of those recordings

Ok great. This “threshold” you hit before I did. I needed 3 instances open before it triggered.
Thanks for the additional details.

Mary

RH-65253 is fixed in Rhino 7 Service Release 10
