Syntactic Elements V1.0 Webinar by DesignMorphine
June 26, 2021
Syntactic Elements V1.0 will explore a direct mesh to fabrication workflow through mesh strip element discretization with Grasshopper. This technique is suitable for multiple scales of installations and materials ranging from paper to metal plating.
In this course we will start with adapting mesh form-finding techniques using Kangaroo to site-specific considerations. We will then deconstruct the resultant mesh into triangle strips using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to ensure various design goals. The proposed workflow is capable of rationalizing doubly-curved geometries and forms that resist quad panel planarization. Using parallel data streams to reference relationships between parts and the whole, we will develop a labeling system that doubles as an assembly ruleset and apply it to the fabrication data. Students will be able to export their results in the form of color-coded, optimally packed curves suitable for laser cutting or similar processes.
In the end, students will learn how to design, optimize, rationalize, and document parts that can be laser cut to construct a real-world structural whole that can be easily assembled for quick and efficient fabrication.
