Sweep1 goes beyond an end profile

Hi, V5
why does sweep1 go beyond the end profile when the rail is perp to it ?

sweep1 goes beyond a profile.3dm (341.9 KB)

When I used sweep1 to go the full distance forming a horseshoe it lapped itself.
so methinks go to the profile, rail is perp, so should be neat. yet requires trimming then mirror copy.

I always like to know why things dont go as expected.

It obviously ignores profile as a finite stop shape.

does direction of sweep matter ? NO.

Hi @Steve1,

The rail being perpendicular to the profiles isn’t the issue. The problem is how tightly the rail curves right at its start. The bend radius there is only about 0.04", but the profile reaches about 0.13" from the rail on the inside of the bend. Sweep1 keeps the profile at a fixed offset from the rail, so the part of the profile inside the bend swings back past the start profile, and the surface folds over itself.

The profile shapes don’t limit the sweep. The rail and the orientation of the profile along it decide where the surface goes.

To fix it, rebuild or fair the start of the rail so its bend radius stays larger than the profile’s inside offset. You can check this with CurvatureGraph or Curvature. Or put the rail on the inside edge of the profile instead of in the middle.

Hope this helps.

3rd topic on your porcelainisolator-egg-part - the other 2 are:

another approach would be, to draw the inner edge (cyan) / curve and use it as rail - especially as this will be the curve that effects your design after the boolean operation.
