SubD with sharp corners?

hey there! i was wondering why the outer edges of subd dont have sharp corners like thos in t-spline. in there it is defined by the edge flow. but in rhino subd all outer edges are smooth.

is there a way to get control over that like in t-splines and fusion and have sharp outer eges?

fusion360

rhino

i mean there are some workarounds. but the workflow is inconsitent and confusing

once i found a way to get the same behaviour like in professional tools like alias and fusion, i cant go back from unsharpening it - because its just possible to add a hard crease but not removing it for outer edges and vertices?

there are always those ugly points when the non sharp meet a sharp

it would be way nicer if subd would automatically round by the edge flow like other software does, not because of the creasing of points and edges by default. i think those settings should be also not splitted up differently.

the hard edge is in this with a right click

and the soft is in this with a left click

i would be happy to help with the development. let me know! in blender everything also works more smooth and like you would expect it.

i think a small adjustment in the where and how those things work together would make rhino a killer subd software.

Crease used on the corner vertices.

thanks! exactly. unfortunately it is a hidden features have to figure out which should be actually automatic and standard.

when i use t-splines and alias its the other way around. the sudb works as i want as a designer - it smoothens along a edge flow.

thats what i meant with my post. i guess the developer made the feature out of the perspective of a programmer.

like in fusion360 it is also in blender easier to change as a default and working like designers need to design works much smoother because the curvature just changes by edge flows

otherwise the subd geometry ends up in a mix of uncontrollable combinations of smoothes, creases and hard edges

once i figured out (after 2 years) that i can crease points (which i have never heard of in other programs unfortunately i have to post another annoying thing  but im just reporting.

points are not easily selectable. yes they are somehow selectable. but the built in solution is not convenient.

when i click on this and crease a point i dont know which i selected

the second time i selected the point of the surface right:

dont shoot the messenger

there is also no selection filter for edges:

i would also welcome a easy visual feedback where i can immediately see what is selectable like in blender where you see the vertices in the 3d model, and the button is higlighted as long as it is active and you can switch through with 1-2-3 buttons on the keyboard - otherwise effective subd modeling is not possible and slow:

oh and when i click on

i cant select vertices anymore with the cmd+shift shortcut. only edges

hi @simonsais in which version are you seeing this? Do you see that also in a new file, on say a simple SubD box?
If so please send the file in the position where this doesn’t work, also provide the result of _SystemInfo
thanks!

Currently we do not have button icon states. The way to see what is selectable is the selection filter:

unfortulately it does not select it

@simonsais pls run _systemInfo in Rhino and post back the results

@simonsais it is _SystemInfo, so without the Run in front

Thanks. This is on the list as https://mcneel.myjetbrains.com/issue/RH-85196

thanks! would it help the development of the new version - where could i post experiences?

I’d say this forum is the right place to do so. Pls make a new thread per issue.
