SubD surface stitching onto mesh

Hi All,
Please have a look at the attached video, this guy is demonstrating how to resurface a mesh using Blender 3D.
Is this possible in Rhino ?

This is similar to the topology tools in Modo. While you cant do this exactly in Rhino Kyle Houchens has demonstrated a method that works pretty well. As Sub D develops im hoping to see active background snapping and other features find there way in to the toolset .

Hi Scott,
Yes, I saw that a few days ago, it is pretty nice, but, as you said, active background snapping is the way to go.

Hi, is there anyone from McNeel who would like to comment on this ?
Will we be able to do something similar to this in V8 ?
Cheers,
Mike.

Hi @Mike_A , did you try _SnapToMeshObject

image

it lets you have a persistent snap to a pre-selected mesh, not as intuitive as Blender, but it is useful.

Why do you want to manually stitch SubD onto mesh? Rhino 7 QuadRemesh command does it automatically. If the mesh is clean, you can also use Rhino 7 ToSubD command. If the mesh is very bad, you can clean it with Rhino 8 ShrinkWrap command.

Although I didn’t ask for the Blender’s feature, I don’t think that quaremesher replace completely what you can do with manual retopology. Many times you want an exact flow of polygons or you are starting from an open mesh that gives trouble to QR and it’s good to have a manual option.

Thanks Joaquin
That is exactly what I would like to be able to do.manual retopology.
Yes, the new Quadremesh/Subd process in Rhino is amazing, but manual control would be great.

Inju Thank you for the video link, that looks great !

This is EXACTLY what I would like to be able to do in Rhino …

When Modo went with a subscription, they lost at least one dedicated customer over it.

Damn, the answer has been right in front of me all this time.

This works beautifully directly onto Pointclouds !
Now…is there a way to set a radius for Snapping to the points ?
ie, the snap will average a 10mm radius of points in the pointcloud on each pick, not just one point.

fwiw- shrinkwrap in v8 works on pointclouds as well-

Hi Kyle,
Yes, I just ran a quick test, Shrinkwrap Point cloud with 13042205 points, to Quadremesh, to SubD …

Wow! Nice!!

Thanks Kyle,
Ideally you would islolate each panel, guards, hood, grill, wheels, rims etc first then work on each piece one at a time.
I just did this as a " brute force" test on an old scan.
It is really impressive !
