Starting Rhino 8 after new installation

hello,
i have a funny problem. i have freshly installed a new version of rhino 8. i had a prior rhino 6 version that i uninstalled after i couldnt open it anymore following a system update of windows 10. when i want to start the program nothing happens, although the task manager tells me that it is on. funny enough after dozens of trials i managed to start it and everything works nicely, if i want to start it again nothing works again. any ideas? i am logged in the mc neel website. i feel really dumb, but i cannot wrap my head around it that it works only once in a while.
thanks for ideas.

I wonder if the update included a new video driver.

After always a backup…
You might check to see what the latest driver available for your video card is.

The “rhino won’t start” checklist I always go through with customers on tech support is:

  1. windows update. Make sure you are fully updated. You may need to run it a few times as some updates rely on others.
  2. Run a repair on rhino- go to programs and features, click on rhino choose modify>repair. This rebuilds you .net install.
  3. Update your video card driver directly from your vendor, Do NOT use the device manager updater, it’s useless, fails 100% of the time and won’t fix your problems.
  4. Run a .Net repair using this tool- https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135
restart your machine and try rhino again. still no luck? Continue below.
  5. Reinstall your VC runtimes using this link-
    https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x64.exe

still no luck? If these fail, then it’s entirely likely your windows install is damaged and a repair of your OS or a reinstall of windows may be in your future. This used to be awful, but it’s really not that bad these days.
