Solids will not extrude

i am attempting to make a ring as in this video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7TG7Tn7wIA

i have the 2 circles, however when i extrude the object will not become a solid even when the box for “solid” is checked.

i believe i fixed the issue, my view was simply in wireframe rather than rendering. im new at this…
