Cant extrude new circle

RC_Controller.3dm (2.4 MB)

Hey i need some help. My circle extrude seems broken. Can someone tell me what im doing wrong? at 1:00:00 in to this tutorial he skates through how he make the wheel. I think there are differences between rhino 7 and 8 on how to extrude a circle and i cant figure it out. I can make the first and second circle but i tap alt and it doesnt copy. Also what is the correct key function to extrude a second circle? Please walk me through this. TIA

On my end, I’m only seeing like 5% of the frame rate on that video, on fiber optic internet.

So, idk if it’s youtube’s server or the video quality.

Not sure who did that video @theoutside ? :beers: :slightly_smiling_face: might be able to hook us up with the workflow sequence at the 58 to 1:04 mark… :slightly_smiling_face:

Same issue over here concerning the frame rate.

gawd…gotomeeting really murdered me with that recording… I have stopped using them for this reason and record live via OBS now.

sorry for that.

the steps are

draw a cylinder, draw your curves that represent the break lines in your shape.

then run the split face command and select those curves.

this will split up the polysurface into individual faces.

you can then sub object select and extrude, scale, drag, etc to get what you want.

the v8 way to do this is use inset, to create the break curves (no split) and then use push pull to create your insets/offsets then use subobject selection to grab edges and scale/ drag as needed.

the whole work flow is pretty cool and super efficient…but thanks to goto meeting it all got
frame-rated over… ugh… sorry about that.

here’s the v8 version using inset, push pull and then sub object selection and gumball.

Kyle! Hey didn’t expect a response from you directly! Ill try that workflow in a minute. It already makes more sense and i only watch it for a second. Hey thanks for making these videos. Im new to rhino and know the learning curve is quite the journey. Your videos are fantastic. My favorite that I’ve found so far. I fully commit to them and spend 7-8 hours on each video. I find frustrations at times and i think the differences between rhino 7 and 8 really mess me up when watching 7 videos and learning on 8. So far ive done the dremel tool, game controller and the rc controller. ive watched the rule of 3 video as well. My 90 day is almost up and im goin to purchase rhino mostly thanks to your videos. Is there any videos of yours you can recommend that sort of paint a full picture of beginner functions? Also im learning rhino because i need a way to model scans. I know this is a big ask but can you do a video on modeling from a scan? The workflow for scaling and converting to a useable model? i know shrinkwrap exists but i need to be able to add nurbs features to the models on multiple planes. Like adding gauges to the a pillar of a car or something. Thanks again. Keep it up!

Hey Mike, thanks for the kind words, and welcome to the Fam!

the video series I always recommend to everyone is Sky Greenawaldts prmary surfacing videos here- https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLABJCJR46itOX8XT3bd2dh590McA94W7k&feature=shared

for working from a scan, shrinkwrap and quadremesh is the best option that is included with rhino-
see this video- https://youtu.be/EDd2wcTKWgE?feature=shared

for “higher end” reverse engineering which includes patch fitting etc… take a peek at

rhino reverse - rhinoreverse (hasn’t been updated in a long time)

mesh2surface - Mesh2Surface (Rhino 5, Rhino 6 and Rhino 7 Compatible) | Food4Rhino

Cyberstrak- Cyberstrak Modeling PlugIn | Food4Rhino
and

Rhino resurf- RhinoResurf v5.104 for Rhino 7/8 and RhinoResurf v4.565 for Rhino 6 /7 | Food4Rhino

there are non rhino plugins like geomagic studio that are the best RE tools out there, but they are brutally expensive.

happy modeling!

Hey thanks for the info. I unfortunately had to bail on that video. the fix for the wheel worked, but after that i kept running into issues where i think i was missing key steps. when to join and i think a pretty important copy paste and i couldn’t get things to come together. I moved on to the USB charger and i was wondering how to get the functionality for commands in the left side toolbar. I see that it replaces the traditional toolbar above the workspace and it looks more user friendly. Thanks!
