SmartTrack not working on Rotate after latest Update

Yeah, good one - I bet Jeremy has it - you do need a ‘smart point’ at the center of rotation and V7 does not place one unless there is a snap, V6 does. I was rotating on the origin where I have an automatic smart point, or snapping the center, which also places a smart point, but a ‘free’ center does not in V7 - thanks y’all. Shout if that is not it.

RH-65668 SmartTrack: Rotate does not place a smart point with no snap.

Well, V7 did, until this most recent update, and now the only way to rotate is by hovering over that point of rotation until it turns blue, THEN it snaps to the angles required. Prior to this update, that extra step wasn’t required. We’re trying to locate others in the office who have not gotten the most recent update to report/demonstrate this since it’s an inconvenience considering the amount of times a day we use rotate as a command to manipulate geometry.

OK - thanks - yes, I call that a bug, I’ll get it on the pile.

So, we just tested the rotation on somebody’s older Rhino version and Rotate puts the ref point in the center of rotation automatically. The newest version doesn’t. That’s basically the issue that we have.

Yes, and hovering over that center of rotation to create that blue ref point is the extra step I was referring to. Only other options are typing in an angle in degrees (also adds an extra step) or using another surface/curve/etc that is already at the angle you want as a reference prior to moving the rotated geometry into its final position (also adds one or several more steps).

Hi Kirk,

For clarity, are you saying this is an issue with the Osnaps off as I detailed, or are you saying it is an issue regardless of the state of the Osnaps?

Regards
Jeremy

Hey Jeremy, thanks for reaching out to clarify. This is regardless of the Osnaps. I tried w/ End/Point on, as well as off. No such luck either way. I also previously tried with different Osnaps on/off and checked my Osnap settings when this issue started last week after the update, no change.

Thanks for the clarification. Nice puzzle here! It works ok on my machine, using the latest SRC (7.11.21257.7001, 2021-09-14) provided I have the Osnaps on, so the question is what is different about your setup to stop it working for you…

RH-65668 is fixed in Rhino 7 Service Release 11 Release Candidate

You’re hovering over the curve endpoint long enough for the ref point to appear. That’s why it works for you.

Hopefully this is moot following Brian’s post. But…

Well, you’re obviously a better mouse manager than me - I cannot select the point and move off it quickly enough for it not to work.

That is, provided I select a center that is on a point. In an attempt to avoid any suspicion of hover I tried selecting a random center while keeping the mouse in motion. That created a SmartTrack point, but it turned off when I selected the first reference point. I wonder if this is a separate bug.

Oh, and if I select my center via the command line - so absolutely no hover  - it still works for me.

Let’s see what the new SRC brings. Fingers crossed.
Jeremy

This specific issue is OK after the new service release candidate (7.11.21264.11001, 2021-09-21).

Yup works after the latest update, thanks for everyone’s help here. Greatly appreciated!
