Just a small addition. The image that I posted above and you included on GitHub shows 100% priority of the environment map over the shadows, which means that the latter will be nearly invisible. Most display modes that I shared in this thread use visible shadows for added depth of the 3d geometry, which means that their corresponding environment map is set to a lower value (typically 80%, but sometimes it reaches anything between 50% and 90%).
I suggest to make a note about that particular setting, because this is the only menu setting on your GitHub folder, thus some people may be left with the impression that the slider must be moved to 100% after they import the display modes. That will potentially downgrade the original intent for the creation of each display mode. I posted that image to show an easy way to significantly improve the viewport performance, but that comes at the cost of losing the deep shadows.
The 3d geometry flashes in white for a brief moment while changing the display mode. That bug is still not resolved? There was a discussion about it in other topics several months ago.
This is my company office PC and it sucks. The one you saw with the Audi was my home PC, which is a high-end custom-built machine. With this one I can’t even assign materials anymore in Rendered mode — the Rhino viewport just turns black.
It’s actually been like this for a long time. Sometimes the whole system freezes. Ever since Windows stopped updating the drivers, I started getting freezes while working. Rhino bugs out and won’t close — I can’t even open Task Manager to force-close Rhino. I end up having to manually restart the PC every time.
If you experience troubles with the display modes on your PC, perhaps doing a cleaning with “Advanced system care” will help.
Also, it consists a sub-program called “Driver booster” that can detect if your PC could use some newer drivers and lets you update up to 2 drivers daily for the free version.
The light lines analysis in Siemens NX uses these colours. I also made an alternative version with added slim black border between each pair to make them distinguish easier.
I recommend you to put your environment map inside a ZIP or RAR file, in order to preserve the original quality of the image. Red colour degrades a lot when it’s saved as JPG/JPEG, especially if it’s uploaded to internet pages where it’s automatically converted to JPEG again. The PNG file format preserves the original quality, but even the PNG images are converted to JPEG when they are uploaded on the forum. What would be great is Alias’ Iso Angle Diagnostic Shading mode. The great thing with several of these diagnostics is that they can create COS for inspection.
And of course persistent G0, G1, G2, G3 locators would be a boon.
The “Zebra” analysis in Rhino 9 WIP has a “Static” option that almost does the same thing. However, its sliders limit the adjustment along a single axis.
The VSR plug-in for Rhino had had a free ball adjustment handle that could rotate the light lines in any direction in a very intuitive way.
A similar effect could be done by adding an environment to the scene. It could be rotated manually.
