Shadow struggle... settings greyed out

I’m struggling with shadow settings. My rendered shadows are too sharp.

Somehow the settings are greyed out when the realtime render assignment is set to ‘Cycles’.

What do I need to do to make my ‘Cycles’ shadows less sharp?

which light are you using here, just the default light?

I think so, yes

Use one rectangular light over top if you don’t want to use the skylight. Skylight probably gives you the softest shadow

When you have no lights at all, including emissive objects, you’ll get a camera-based directional light, which gives you the hard shadows.

Default lighting in Rhino is to have skylight, btw.

That is because the settings on this page are for Rendered and similar display modes. They have no bearing on Cycles.
