Self Illumination

Hi folks,
I turned on Self-illumination in the “Advanced Settings” area of the material settings menu to get an object to brighten up a bit. Are there any settings that allow us to control the degree of brightness so that the object can look a bit more 3-dimensional? The Help section suggests there is a Diffuse Lighting control that can be turned on and off, but I can’t seem to find it. It seems like there ought to be a slider that would allow you to adjust intensity.

Thanks for the help with this.

Hi Michael - on the standard Rhino material, the emission color will determine brightness - black= None. But you may want to look at an emissive channel in a ‘Physically Based’ material as well.

Hi Pascal,

Thanks for responding. I tried adjusting the emission color. It defaulted to black. I tried a grey and a white and didn’t see any difference.

Hi Michael - I guess I’ll need an example file, maybe I am answering the wrong question - here’s what I meant:

But these basic Rhino materials do not actually emit light into the scene like a physically based one would -

Hi Pascal,

I notice in your image below that all three of the check boxes above “emission color” were unchecked. I went back and tried that and suddenly started seeing the color change. Then I went back and turned on “Self-illumination” and started getting somewhere. It’s not as fine-tuned as I used to get in Flamingo, but its something.

Thanks for helping.
