Sculptural Cast Glass Lighting

Hi Rhino & Grasshopper Community,

I fell in love with this software about 10 years ago, and it now shapes how I experience the world. It also plays an integral role in my artwork.

All projects start in Grasshopper, then are 3D printed, and invested in refractory plaster. The form is then melted out of the plaster block, and the hollow space filled with molten glass. The plaster is then sawed and pressure washed off to reveal the glass sculpture inside. I have a good video of the process here.

I work mainly with homeowners to build custom light sculptures for their homes, out of a backyard studio in Seattle. I hold a few open studios a year and show at the Bellevue Arts Fair. If you’re in the area, it would be great to meet you. More of my work is on my website.

Inisovist Parallax Pendant - Inspired by running in the woods, modeled using isovist logic, where the central light source is always concealed from every vantage point. This piece was featured in the Corning Museums annual publication of notable works in glass.

Kale Seeds - modeled using Kangaroo using differential growth logic.

Snakey Snakey - Woven glass lattice with steel snake holder. Modeled using unit cell logic.

Azalea - Another lattice, again modeled using unit cell logic. Two separate glass feeds to control color.

Wall Flower - Inspired by the ‘Golden Angle’ found in flowers. Each petal rotated 137.5degrees from the previous, scaled, and connected via multipipes.

Purple Berry - Inspired by basket weaving, but I got tired of the script, and turned some parameters up to 11 and found something compelling.

Beautiful work! It’s amazing the first lamp, Inisovist Parallax Pendant can survive the contraction tensions in the casting.

You’re spot on in that the real artistry lives in the chemistry of the refractory molds. Both molds and glass have a very similar coefficient of thermal expansion to ensure the glass does not get crushed in the cooling process. The molds need to be strong enough to survive 1500F for days, and weak enough to divest back at room temperature. I spent a year making my own mix, and after very trying year of many failed pieces, I’ve got something that’s giving great results.
