Rhino7 display issues

until v8 is complete and shipping
Then v8 should wipe the floor with v7 on a silicon mac.

That’s my expectation too.
V8 on a nicely setup Silicon Mac should be a good choice.

When rendered with wireframes, I had the same porcupine needles decorating my models in all perspectives (even orthogonal views). It looks exactly like the screenshots that @greg.burgreen posted above. After a reboot and viola, the problem was resolved. This was with a 2019 16" MBP using MacOS Ventura 13.6. I also had GPU Tessellation turned off with antialiasing set at the default of 4x.

I’m not sure what the heck happened to cause this. Maybe it’s a GPU fault? If this happened to anyone else, did you get some idea of what caused the problem? @stevebaer did anyone from McNeel investigate this?

Until then, it looks like I’m solving this like an overpriced Windows machine.

Hi Bill -

At this point, all of our development efforts are going into Rhino 8 and the display code is completely different for that version.

@wim Thanks for letting me know - looking forward to the next version. I started version 8 beta and it did not have the odd wireframe rendering problem. For what it’s worth, it looks like this problem is not apparent in the new and better code base.

Regards, Bill

This is an OpenGL driver bug that is specific to certain combinations of Mac hardware and operating system version. We don’t have much control over this.

Rhino 8 display was a massive rewrite and is based on Metal instead of OpenGL. It is an entirely different beast and hopefully we won’t see bugs like this with it anymore going forward.

@stevebaer Glad to hear about the migration to Metal. Thanks to the conscious staff at McNeel for answering these nagging questions.

tl;dr If you get ā€œporcupine needlesā€ in your wireframe renders - reboot.
