Rhino V7 resets itself

Rhino 7 resets itself at irregular intervals. This affects toolbars, display modes, gumball settings and my snap settings. This happens about every two weeks and makes me make as few adjustments as possible in the meantime so that I don’t have to import so many display modes. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?

Hi @ismail_oe

I have had this happen and it was much worse in previous Rhino versions. I haven’t had this happen to me in V7 yet but I have had a reset of Rhino after a crashing a few times.

When this used to happen I remember that it always happened if I…

  1. Had Rhino open and I saved a file
  2. Then exited Rhino
  3. Shut down my computer. Right after closing Rhino

Rhino might be still saving your work and gui changes for a bit after you close. I always wait to shut down my computer after exiting Rhino. Seems Rhino might choke writing to the gui file your last changes and needs more time than we think.

Did you shut down your computer before this happens? Are you saving to a network or web drive?

That’s all I have to offer on this elusive yet very annoying glitch.

Hi! unfortunately it has nothing to with shutting down the computer, they also happen when i open files. Im saving/opening them on/from OneDrive or a network drive via vpn mostly. Our files have a lot of blocks placed inside them and some of them are saved on the network drive. Maybe it has something todo with it.

it just started happening to me on v8 for mac, i never ever had that happening before.

i’m honestly glad that it doesn’t seem to be a v7 specific problem. that increases the chances of a solution.

Hi -

I’m afraid that the only way to solve is, is to be able to reliably reproduce the behavior. If you know of a way to force this to happen, please let us know.

In the meantime, there is this:

This is a reliable way to save and restore all your settings in case of a disaster. It’s only written for Windows currently because that’s all I know about where settings are stored and how to go through the file system, I’m sure something like it is possible on Mac, if someone wants to jump in and use my script as a starting point and make it work on Mac…

Hi! Thanks for your reply! Unfortunately my company still uses Rhino 7…

You can still back up the settings folder manually here:

C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\McNeel\Rhinoceros\7.0

Make a copy of the folder somewhere and keep the copy updated if you make changes to your settings. If something goes wrong, close Rhino and replace the entire settings folder at the above address with your backup copy. Most of your settings will be restored (not toolbars).
