Rhino - using opacity mapping

Hi
I’m trying to create a curved perforated surface and the forum seems to be recommending using the opacity mapping instead of a physical model.

I’ll be using it for visualisation but wondering how the mapping actually works.

In Rhino 7 you can use the Physically Based material and add a texture to the Alpha channel so you can create such a perforated effect.

Here a pencil holder that I modelled as a simple solid, but with the material it looks like it was made from chicken wire:
