Rhino to Blender Issue / Rendering

Hi,

I’m trying to ditch Keyshot and use Blender for my product renderings but I’m badly stuck.

I already know the basics of Blender and have no problem building a scene. The problem starts with adding Material. The models I import into Blender just have a bad mesh topology and therefore uv unwrapping fails, which makes materials look wrong. I’m aware that the mesh topology is a known issue for imported objects but it still looks like people are rendering in Blender, so there has to be a solution I guess?

The last 2 days I read dozens of threads, tried the import_3dm plugin from @nathanletwory, tried .fbx and .obj, tested Quad Remesher, and watched every video I could find but nothing really worked.

I’ve attached 2 files, where “kerzenhalter-test” is one I created myself and yes, it’s has quite a bad surface. The Apple TV is a downloaded file which looks really good inside Rhino so I thought it’s maybe just my design but no, importing the Apple TV into Blender, it also creates a really bad mesh.

Is there something fundamental I’m missing? I really don’t know where else I should look or what I could try.

Thanks,
David

That is the mesh topology generated by Rhino. @nathanletwory is my old work account, I no longer work on Rhino. My personal account is @jesterking .

Anyway, as said Rhino does the meshing.

You should be able to just UV map in Rhino and ensure the render meshes are saved along. That should give you the UV mapping as made by Rhino (and used by RhinoCycles).

Not sure what I should be looking at, the objects import and render just fine?

Thanks for the reply Nathan,

good to know!

So import_3dm should preserve the UV mapping done in Rhino?

My bad about the models, I wasn’t clear enough - yes, default or simple colored material are fine. But the problem starts with PBR Textures. All the seams get visible and also it looks like some of the triangles of the mesh start to pop up?
I try my best to describe the problem but I’m just not familiar with the terminology - please forgive me.

Can you try adding a material in Rhino, make sure it is uvmapped ok, then save and share that file here? I no longer have access to Rhino to test myself by creating files.

When you save the file please make sure you save with the textures embedded.
