When we hosted Windows XP and Windows 7 VMs back in the day it was extremely easy. Importantly, I used to be able to able to strip out all the garbage using an embedded license and it was extremely lightweight and pretty low-cost and straightforward. I think technically we weren’t supposed to be running them in a VM, but it wasn’t something that caused any issues.
Of course I’m sure this can be done for Win10/11 via Windows IoT Enterprise (I think it is $80 or so, I need to get a proper quote from my distributor), but I would rather just cut Microsoft out of the equation if possible. I don’t know to what degree Microsoft has infested their OS with AI and cloud garbage, I’m looking for full offline license and I don’t think that is their business model.
I’m not (yet) into Linux, but the winds are blowing hard in that direction…
Perhaps most of you know about it, but to disable most of the crap that Windows is blessing us with, I use “ShutUp10” (works for W11 as well). I’ve used it for years.
Another very nice software is 0patch (zero-patch) which patches Windows earlier and better than Microsoft, and you can keep using W10 safely for many years to come using their patches. It installs security patches in runtime, no need to restart etc., etc.
The free version suffice for most, although you can up the game with a subscription.
That’s when Microsoft stops free security updates and starts charging:
$30/year per device for consumers (1 year only)
$61 → $122 → $244/year for businesses (over 3 years)
Maybe “Web3” will solve the problem so we can just all accept Windows 11 privacy violations, but who knows.
I’m not even a big fan of Linux if I can’t get something like MasterSCam to work on it without paying for upgrades.
But if Rhino converts then I might try it out. I would still need a CAM solution though, so need a chump to make a really really good CAM ETO with grasshopper or somem
Continuing to use Windows is to actively participate in doing harm. “Recall” is such a blindingly horrible and stupid idea, only good for harvesting your data to train their river-boiling AI’s.
Sorry, it’s not specifically about Rhino on Linux. But news like this certainly drives home why we need an alternative. I defy you to describe Windows 11 as anything other than a spyware program.
Using an operating system is based on trust. Don’t forget that AI is being put in all sorts of places - like Apple Intelligence. And no, I’m not trusting that much either. I do have a Linux machine for a reason… (and I’m fully expecting AI shit ending up on Linux as well). I’d be so happy if I needed the Windows machine for gaming only.
There is already a plethora of AI tools available for Linux. Not all people will spend boatloads of time in setting up and configuring. It is only a matter of time when these get integrated, along with those that work as a SaaS.
Funnily enough, i suspect that Linux is doing most of the “river boiling”.
Many of the models and high intensity compute stuff will be running on various Linux forks. In that sense, Windows is largely acting as a front end, little more than a GUI.
Really, the AI is, I bet, mostly Linux powered stuff at the back end. Most of the energy consumed on training and queries will be probably on massively scalable multi-GPU Linux systems.
So yeah, I guess that Windows is an evil spyware, taking pictures of desktops to send to… its Linux overlord.
It’s not Ai itself that’s the problem. I am running local Ai via Ollama on Linux right now.
It’s that MS and Apple have backdoor links to intel agencies and act as big brother. The concern is that Ai can be used in the background to scope user data and develop personality profiles for Palantir databases. So anyone that thinks “incorrectly” can be flagged. So, the problem with Microsoft and Apple is the Minority report style dystopia. Of course, it is advertised as “we read your data to let you better organize”. Then they’ll ask something a political majority agrees on like: “we need to read all user data to eradicate porn” … then “to eradicate pedophiles” … “then to eradicate dissidents (those opposing the current political party, whichever it may be)” … then it frog-boils little by little. Don’t expect them to explicitly tell you they are building a surveillance dystopia.
Psychological warfare is a thing I mean they have people in military uniforms sitting Infront of computers for this sort of things either to derail conversations or rile people up against one another just to name a few tactics.
reality is more stranger than fiction and it will only get worse.
I misunderstood “AI shit”, yes all AI research happens on linux or at least windows subsystem for linux, but products (aka “shit”) tend to end up only on windows or mac due to popular demand
this would be a perfect intro to talk about our sponsor NordVPN…
