I’m having a hard time finding a cheap (or rather affordable) 3D scanner. Any recommendations?

I really only need a point cloud with 1/4" (5mm… ish) accuracy. For $1000 USD even 3/8" (10mm) would be okay.

I have some ideas about this type of technology that are very refined from very extensive experience. I’ll try to boil it down very simply here: 1.) The best 3D capture is always one that is taken from a very stable position – regardless of how motion friendly the implications are, i.e. “hand-held-scanners”. The common ‘dream’ of scanning objects where the scanner is constantly moving around and expected to capture ‘everything’ accurately and patch it all together flawlessly – is a false hope…

I started using https://scaniverse.com/ recently. I evaluated over 40 apps for iphone, and that’s the best option imo. It’s maybe +/-0.03"

Also ‘spectre3D’ and ‘3D scanner’ are other apps that might have potential.

It’s probably been a few months since last time I checked, but the new LIDAR technology is likely leading to the spawning of more n’ more apps over time.

Just need a alignment solution. Maybe meshlab is the answer but I’m still procrastinating

We’re right on the verge of being able to just use a cell phone… it’s almost accurate enough, but not quite. But the step up in price to a ‘proper’ 3D scanner is like $8,000.
