Rhino linework to Photoshop

Pattern.3dm (3.9 MB)

Hello,

I’ve tried exporting the linework in the enclosed file as a .ai and .dwg and importing into Photoshop, but i get the same error on import: “Could not place because the parser module cannot parse the file.”

So far, only the .PDF format works when importing into Photoshop.

My system info is here:
system_info.txt (2.9 KB)

Photoshop 2024

Any thoughts on why .ai or .dwg wouldn’t work when importing vector lines from Rhino?

A

I am also wondering the same thing.

The only way to get linework (vectors) into Photoshop is EPS.

Linework in a PDF will be rasterized.

Strange because a Rhino PDF brought into Affinity Photo comes in as vector objects with fill and stroke.

Hmmm, I though EPS could be imported as a vector mask to Photoshop and remain editable, but that does not seem possible now. Searching the internet, it appears vector files can be imported to Photoshop as smart objects, and can be resized without loss, but are not otherwise editable.

Only if you print to PDF as raster from Rhino.

Hi Evelyn -
This sounds like a question for a Adobe forum?

Here is a curve in Rhino exported to vector PDF. Photoshop rasterizes this. If opened as a Smart Object, it is resolution independent and can be resized. However, it is not editable as a curve in Photoshop. If Adobe Illustrator is also on the same system, it is possible to copy and paste from Illustrator to Photshop as a Shape, the curve will remain editable and stroke can be applied.

vector.3dm (42.0 KB)

vector.pdf (1.6 KB)

That does work, I just tested a PDF from Rhino with Affinity (it is free now) and exported as a PSD with an editable vector when opened in Photoshop. The vector comes in on a Shape layer that can be selected and edited with the Path Selection / Direct Selection tools. Sorry, cannot upload the PSD, extension not allowed here.

Fine. An issue for an Adobe forum then.
