Rhino 8 is using/showing Rhino 7 icon on taskbar

When I open Rhino 8 it is showing rhino 7 icons on the task bar. The correct version of the open Rhino is version 8.

I have version 8 pinned to my taskbar. No reason for the r7 icon to even be showing. r7 is not pinned to my taskbar.

How can I fix this?

Having the same issue. Did you ever find a solution?

Nothing official. Did read in an earlier post regarding this issue that it was a windows OS problem.

I suspect the only way to fix is uninstall r7?

I’d bet that would work. I was going to keep R7 going since I work with people using it, but I guess I can export my files as R7 still. I’ll try and let ya know

:joy: I uninstalled and it still showed the R7 icon until I restarted, now it doesn’t have an icon at all

Thank you, Colin.

I uninstalled R7 and opened a file created in R8 (a DWG file) and its showing a “Blank Icon” (no R8 logo).
I was not expecting that. Opened a 3DM file, also no icon.

I reran the associations, applied to R8, just to make sure in windows. No affect on the icons, still blank.

Appears that icons are not working as intended?

OK, found the issue, does appear to be windows. If your windows 11 taskbar is set to “combine taskbar buttons and hide labels”, it aso hides all Rhino 8 icons (only shows a single blank white icon).

EDIT/UPDATE.
3dsMax (autodesk) does NOT have this icon issue, only Rhino does on my system.

hmm, that’s not what I am seeing here. I have that checked, yet all my instances pop up as separate program icons. Can you post an image what you are seeing?

This is what I’m seeing when a rhino file is open on my taskbar (see red arrow)

@wm_c I think that’s a Windows issue, I’d search for something like ‘restore or rebuild taskbar icons in Windows 11’

Thank you Gijs, I deleted and rebuilt the icon cache as suggested. No change in my Rhino icons.
Not having problems with any icons other than Rhino. My system including the OS is only about 4 months old or so. I had zero issues with the Rhino icons until I installed r8.

Somehow my incorrect r8 icons are linked to r7 (r7 is no longer on my system).

Hi @wm_c what I would try next in that case is to perform a Rhino repair

Repaired and restarted, no luck.

Maybe this will help?.. r8 Seems to be linked to r7.

@wm_c strange. See if you can delete any rhino 7 shortcuts and drag Rhino.exe from the Rhino 8 program folder to your taskbar to create the shortcut manually. Does that help?

Try this:
Use the Windows 11 Search tool to search for file assoc

Then click on Choose a default app for each type of file

A settings panel will open:

Click on the entry for the .3dm file type. [Note: my illustration shows a non-Rhino program - ignore that, I use a utility which opens the version of Rhino that matches the version of the .3dm file.]

A panel will pop up with a choice of applications to associate with the .3dm file:

Choose Rhino 8 and click on Set default

If you don’t see Rhino 8 in the list, scroll down to the very bottom and use the Choose an app on your PC option to navigate to the Rhino 8 exe and select it directly.

Save your efforts to fix it. It’s not a Windows problem. It’s a Rhino/Windows problem going back several major versions of Rhino, and it just got worse with the release of Rhino 8. I reported it here and was told it’s a known issue but somebody, somewhere seems to be working on it. I’ve received both Windows (10) and Rhino updates (both Rhino 7 & Rhino 8) in the past two weeks and the behavior is now different than it was two weeks ago, but not better: now Rhino 6 also populates to the Rhino 7 pinned taskbar button! It’s a mess…

Thanks Gijs, I searched Rhino 7 from apps, it showed me an icon for R7 that was “missing” and asked if I wanted to delete it, I answered yes and now have Rhino 8 icons on my taskbar.

There were no rhino 7 icons on my desktop, only the rhino 8 I had created yesterday from the exe file.

Thank you!
Walt

Thank you Jeremy. I was certain that was my problem a couple of days ago. Checked all of the associations I could find at the time.

Even rebuilt the icon cache, to no avail.

I appreciate all of the work you went to in search of an answer!

I have the inverse issue: my Rhino 7 is shown under Rhino 8’s taskbar icon.
