Hi,
I used to have Rhino 8 working with RC updates and today I got an update available message. I said ok to install the update. After the update rhino was frozen when I launched it so proceeded to uninstall to have a fresh start.
Problem is that the Rhino installer fakes the install, it says the install worked properly and that I’m good to go but nothing is installed on my computer, the launcher shortcuts point to an inexistant location …
I tried downloading the lastest installer from the website but I still encounter the same problem. How can I properly clean my computer from previous installs and have a fresh start ?
Hi Thomas,
Lets try and repair the .net (there was a windows update this week)
- Run the combined 2015, 2017, and 2019 installer using this link from Microsoft:https://support.microhttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloadssoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloadsUse the 64-bit tool since Rhino is a 64-bit application.

Repair option (vs download and install)
-
Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
-
Right-click Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (2012-2022) and choose Repair.
-
Run the .NET repair tool from Microsoft:https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30135
Then try and install or Repair your Rhino.
Hi Japhy,
I tried the repair tools you mentioned and started the installers again. Here are the results so far :
Previous Rhino 7 installer : Works, when prompted to update, nothing happens.
Latest Rhino 7 installer : Works.
Latest Rhino 8 installer : Installs nothing on the computer (yet Rhino _ is visible in windows “installed apps”)
More precisions : during the install of Rhino 7 I can see the info message “Installing Rhino 7” while the progressbar advances, during the “install” of Rhino 8 I can only see “installing Rhino 8 Language service pack” …
Since Rhino 7 install is ok I suspect that the problem comes from Rhino 8 stuff still around from the failed update and keeping Rhino 8 from installing properly and not from the Microsoft Redist. I just can’t get my hand on it, I tried some cleaning tools for the register but it didn’t pay out. The uninstall tool doesn’t seem to remove what’s problematic.
Cleaning tools have been known to remove files needed for install/uninstall. If that is the case a manual uninstall can be done like so… Manually Uninstalling Rhino [McNeel Wiki]
Tried the manual cleaning right now and I still get the same behavior, only the localization (en-us).rhi file is installed in ProgramData and nothing else.
The folder Rhino 8 is not even created in Program Files.
Problem solved : I switched computer XD No problem on the new one, this will remain a mystery…
