Rhino 8 has began randomly crashing

Hi all, i have been using rhino fine over the last couple of days, however all of a sudden the file i have been working on has began randomly crashing and doesn’t save data- after around 10 minutes of activity. The screen freezes, unfreezes for a moment and then shuts itslef down.
i have a very high spec Alienware m18 laptop, and so capability shouldn’t be the issue. One thing i should note, my laptop completed a restart, i am unsure if this was due to Rhino crashing or just a coincidence as it had been wanting to complete an update earlier. Also, this problem began happening after adding materials to my model, but the problem still occurs even in shaded mode, top and perspective view, so not sure if this is related.
Please help as i would like to resume working on my model.
Thank you very much
(also crash report hasn’t been an option )

Hi Alessia - does this happen with the one file only? If so please send it to tech@mcneel.com, with a link back to this topic in your comments. In the meantime, please update the graphics drivers from the NVidia and Intel websites to the most current ones.

Hi thanks for your reply, unfortunately i don’t have another file to compare this with as this is a new laptop so i have only been working on that one file. Should i still send it to tech@mcneel.com ?

Hi Alessia - I would update the graphics drivers before doing anything. Since the computer is new, please also get any and all available Windows updates, then see how things go.

-Pascal

thank you, i will try this

UPDATE: so i have just updated all the drivers, system and rhino version and restarted the laptop but i have still had the same problem, this time the app didn’t crash however wouldn’t respond so i had to force shut

Hi Alessia - can you please post the file you are working on or send to tech@mcneel.com?
-Pascal

i have sent it to tech@mcneel.com or i can post it also if you would like?

Hi Alessia - if the file is not confidential, please post it here. In addition, can you please do this:

  1. Open Windows task manager
  2. Open Rhino.
  3. Get Rhino to freeze or stop respnding’
  4. In task manager, find the Rhino app in the list, right click, and choose
  5. Create memory dump file

This will create a massive file on your disk - a dialog will tell you where it is. Find the file, zip it, and send via Rhino - Upload to Support, to my attention.

i have completed this step but i am having trouble locating the dump file. I have tried finding it manually and also using the search bar, but no luck. however, i received a pop up saying that it has been successfully saved (and location), however navigating this location is proving difficult as the stated folder doesn’t seem exist

Hi Alessia - it should be here (copy paste into the Windows Explorer address bar)

%localappdata%\Temp

It may be that Temp counts as a hidden folder - not sure - but if so you can change that:

Hi Alessia,
The issue has been logged.
We will let you know asap.

In the mean time, you can disable GPU tessellation and your crashes should cease.
Options->View->OpenGL->GPU Tessellation … Uncheck

We will keep you updated on the YT.
It is also public so you can check in on it as well.

Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Mary Ann Fugier
