Rhino 7 takes 1.5 hours to open

Starting yesterday, Rhino 7 has had trouble opening. Just now it took an hour and a half to actually open after running from the start menu or desktop shortcut. Safe-mode opens right away. I have no extra plugins installed besides ones that ship with Rhino. As of yesterday morning, it was working fine.

Things I have already tried:

  • Updating graphics driver
  • Repair Rhino
  • Uninstall/reinstall Rhino
  • Run as Administrator

I did not make any system changes (windows updates etc) yesterday, but it’s possible my computer auto-updated something in the background.

I appreciate any other suggestions you might have!

Here’s the SystemInfo report:

I would turn off the computer, remove the USB Displaylink device then try and restart with only the Laptop screen. See if that helps. We have seen some issues with the extra USB docking devices.

Does that make a difference?

also check for citrix workspace-

from our dev team-
"Rhino will fail to launch on some systems with Citrix Workspace 22.6 installed. It works fine with 22.2 and 22.7 "

Disconnecting the DisplayLink device does not help, and I do no have Citric on my computer.

I accidentally disconnected my internet and it started right up. So maybe it is a license issue? Or a firewall? Definitely seems possible that my company changed some firewall settings on me in the background…

So to be sure:

  • Starting in Safe Mode but connected to the internet seems normal
  • Starting in normal, not safe, mode but disconnected from the internet also takes the expected (short) time…

correct?

Splash screen looking for something on the 'net?

That is where I was headed in my tiny brainlet. Hmm- @Christopher_Morse if you put the /NoSplash switch on the icon used to start Rhino, does it go fast?

“C:\Program Files\Rhino 7\System\Rhino.exe” /NoSplash

-Pascal

Is it just Rhino, or do you have other programs that are slow to open? We experienced something like this many years ago (2008 I think) and it was a DDOS attack. Same thing, unplug from the network and it was fine.

I added the /NoSplash switched and Rhino opened right up. I took the /NoSplash switch away, and it opened right up again.

Not sure if the /NoSplash cleared some corrupted file or something, or if it was just some other problem that resolved itself independently and coincidentally around the same time.

If it happens again, I can post updates here. But for now at least it seems to be back to normal. Thanks for your help everyone!

Hm… odd… well, I am glad it is resolved, for now at least - thanks for the update.

I have similar issues (not that extreme, though). /nosplash makes Rhino start at least 90s faster.

An update in case anyone is interested:
It happened again today. Without /nosplash it took >1 hour before it opened. I added /nosplash and it opened immediately. It must be some firewall-type restriction that my company is doing behind the scenes interfering with something the splash screen is looking for. Anyways, perfectly happy with the /nosplash fix so thanks for your help!
