Reviewed Demo by Kyle Houchens and put it to work!

I recently viewed a demo by Kyle Houchens on SubD surface modeling. I’ve been doing this for a long time since the early days of TSplines. Kyles demo was an eye opener and I wanted to put what I had learned to use. I did a quick sketch of a bar code reader in Procreate and then created the 3D SubD model over the sketch per Kyles instructional video. The image posted here is of the sketch and the 3D SubD model. All SubD, no NURBS at this time. I use NURBS, as Kyle suggested, for the final detailing. Thanks Kyle for the fantastic demos you do…they are invaluable.

wow Jim… that looks amazing!

Can’t overstate how delightful it is to see someone take our videos and apply those ideas to their own work.

well done!

Hi, your model looks amazing and with so few subdivisions!!! I’m also a t-spline/subD lover but probably I end up using more subdivisions to do what I do… your model is soooo clean!! do you have a recording of how you did it?

BTW I think I saw all the published videos of Kyle Houchens, they are very well done and clear!

Unfortunately, I don’t have a video recording of how I did it. I guess when I worked the NURBS, I also practiced what they called lean modeling. I pretty much followed Kyle‘s demo when he did the side view of a handheld device. I’ll see if I can find the link and send it to you. The key that I found as you build what you want it’s not only important to use as few planes or faces as you need to accomplish what you want, but also to remove extra lines as long as they don’t adversely affect your topology. But I started the sub D exactly like Kyle did and then went from there using tools like crease, weighting, lines, etc. that TSplines didn’t have but they’ve added to Rhino sub D.

That looks lovely, Jim :raising_hands:

I still have my old T-Splines license for Rhino 5 but I’m on Mac now so can’t access it.

Does V8 or Serengeti have the same none destructive multi pipe function yet? That is so powerful, to be able to dip in and out to make adjustments to the nodes and radii etc.

Nice environment and reflections on the model too - all looks very Syd Mead :star_struck:

v8 and the v9 beta have multipipe. It’s a tad different than tsplines but you can get the same results.

Hi,

Here is the Rhino SubD Video I watched, done by Kyle Houchens. He’s a master and his explanations are detailed and informative. Additionally, his commentaries inform and entertain at the same time…I can’t recommend his demos any higher…they’re great!
