I enabled in R8 like I did in R7 the cursor tooltip “distance” option.
You can find it in the “modeling aid” shelve option
Maybe it’s only me but R8 doesn’t display “distance” when extruding simple plane with the sphere on gumball.
Am I wrong?

You’re not wrong. This is definitely a bug. I’m not seeing the distance tooltip on any of the handles when dragging. I opened a issue here. Thanks for reporting.
Sorry, my mistake. That’s a known issue and should be fixed in this weeks release candidate.
