Qbitec for Rhino - new large-scale point cloud data plugin

Qbitec are in the early stages of development and would love to hear from you, the expert community. Your experience and insights are invaluable to them, and they would like to know:

  • What challenges do you face when working with point cloud data in Rhino?
  • Are there specific features or tools you wish to enhance your workflow?
  • What’s your vision for an ideal point cloud processing experience in Rhino?

How you can help:

I just stumbled across this post. Downloading now. We work with very large point cloud datasets and would love to write up a more detailed list of challenges. I will get on it.

Thank you so much!

First impressions, very excited that this is getting some attention. We work with EXTREMELY Large point cloud datasets in the industrial warehouse space. Few questions:
1-Is the overall intent of this primarily focused on viewport performance? Or is the intention to enhance Rhino/Grasshopper ability to hand large Point Cloud datasets functionally? Example- grasshopper nodes. The point cloud looks wonderful, but just as a backdrop. I assume it being more than just visual is on the roadmap.
2-User experience so far is a significant improvement over vanilla in terms of legibility and performance.
3-Ability to import so many different formats (INCLUDING RCP RCS) super big win. Hell yes.

From a workflow perspective the biggest bottlenecks for my team working with point clouds is when creating custom scripting in grasshopper, mostly Ghpython, without preprocessing the data to divide it into smaller clusters or segmentation, a lot of our automation typically hangs. This is most likely due to improper development on our side of the fence, but it is still a bottleneck all the same. We are learning quickly though.

Better performance is a must, but I think a good round of evolution across the board with large point cloud and the ability to be surgical with selections of points is the catalyst needed for Reality Capture users to truly consider Rhino as their tool of choice for point cloud manipulation.

My comments may be a little out of your scope, but I hope some good feedback all the same.

Appreciate you.
