Help Shape the Future: Feedback Needed for New Point Cloud PlugIn

Dear Rhino 3D Community,

We’re thrilled to connect with you! Our team of software developers is working on a new PlugIn designed to overcome some of the current limitations in handling large-scale point cloud data within Rhino 3D. We know how important streamlined workflows are, and we’re dedicated to creating a solution that truly meets your needs.

This is where you come in!

We’re in the early stages of development and would love to hear from this expert community. Your experience and insights are invaluable to us, and we’d like to know:

  • What challenges do you face when working with point cloud data in Rhino 3D?
  • Are there specific features or tools that you wish existed to enhance your workflows?
  • What’s your vision for an ideal point cloud processing experience in Rhino?

We’ve already developed a prototype and are eager to share it with you. Check it out here: Point Clouds via Qbitec For Rhino - Prototype

How you can help:

  1. Share your thoughts and feedback directly in this thread.
  2. Discuss pain points, wish-list features, or ideas to improve usability.
  3. Drop us an email if you want to test the current state (coming soon!).

Let’s make something truly useful together!

Looking forward to your feedback,
The Qbitec team

That is a big step for pointcloudmodeling in Rhino!
Cant wait to see this in action. Please implement modeling tools as well… oh and connect to VisualARQ… This could be exiting

How many points does the pointcloud in the video contain?

Usually I have to say that Rhino can process an incredible amount of points in a pointcloud, I never experienced trouble working with them.
Of course importing takes some time, but once you converted them it is fine.
My personal best in size was about 1 billion Points I guess.
The only painful thing is cropping the clouds, but RhinoCommon offers very nice tools to speed this up in my eyes.

But of course I am very keen to see what you do in your app

Thats great feedback. Thank you.

We will look more detailed at the capabilities of VisualARQ. So far it looks promising as a complementary PlugIn for BIM workflows.

The point cloud shown in the video contains slightly above 3 billion points. The largest dataset I was able to test with my notebook was 45 billion points:
13th Gen Intel(R) Core™ i7-13800H
32GB Ram
Nvidia A2000 Ada

Bute viewing the data is just the technical foundation. We would love to get feedback on the workflow which should be supported. So, points like better cropping of the data are valuable information. What PlugIns are you using to cover this task today?

We want to involve the community as early as possible and work towards a setup installer to test the current state.

@Petras_Vestartas and @andrea.settimi have done outstanding work with their plugin.
I use this for most of my pointcloud related operations.

In general I think cropping is a main issue for me, that usually is a bit easier in CloudCompare.
Reducing/Cleaning goes very well with Cockroach.

I work in construction and usually struggle with meshing, because it generates so many messy options. Yet, I prefer working with the clouds as I think they are more precise as a processed mesh.
