FWIW, this is what I see in a default Shaded mode:

I’m not 100% convinced that adding more options will make it impossible for users to find combinations that don’t work very well. The opposite might be true.
But, here you go:

I think it very much depends on the display type. Small displays with high resolution (like MBPs) make them hair-thin. It’s hard to find an universal colour for selection that suits all display modes and make it distinct enough.
