Parametric canopy

Hello,
I want to create a parametric canopy that has diamond panels. I want the columns to be produced from the mesh. The columns should be narrower from the middle

There are many problems that occur when i try to do so

1- when i try to make the columns and the mesh one component, the pattern does not apply in a good way and stretches on the columns

2- when the pattern applied is nicely, the columns are not delicate and are not narrow from the middle as seen in the third attached photo

3- for the pattern to apply nicely, i had to split the mesh on top from the columns, which is not how the canopy should be (it should be one seamless component)

Things like this are often done with Kangaroo.

Yes, when i used kangaroo, the columns were done very nicely and the pattern was applied to them. However, i dont know how i can make the mesh or the surface on top and the columns one smooth component so that the pattern applies to both of them and create the needed column i want.
