Looks ok here. Are you running through a proxy server/firewall?

This looks like a DNS failure to me. DNS is the process of turning a domain name (in this case yak.rhino3d.com) into an IP address (in this case something like 75.101.184.39).

  1. Open CMD (From the Windows start menu, type Cmd, then press Enter)
  2. Type nslookup yak.rhino3d.com.com and press enter
  3. Please paste the results here

I get this:

C:\> nslookup yak.rhino3d.com
Server: 192.168.0.1
Address:	192.168.0.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:
yak.rhino3d.com	canonical name = yak.rhino3d.com.herokudns.com.

@Japhy ,
just the standard Windows Defender.
I haven’t seen any other issues that makes me think this is the issue (I could also be completely wrong!)
for instance I have no issues retrieving a Rhino license.

I’ll respond to @brian also, but would consider allowing apps additional access if needed.

@brian , I get this:

C:\Users\johnc>nslookup yak.rhino3d.com.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.1

definitely not the same as yours…

@brian , @Japhy ,
I allowed Rhino.exe to communicate through the firewall and the Package-Manager now launches, however I now get a new error when installing a package: “remote name could not be resolved”
I am assuming I have both of the issues, 1- firewall, and also 2- DNS failure?

Apologies for being “that guy”, but what do you suggest for the “remote name could not be resolved” error?

I’m researching now, but any quick answer would be appreciated!
thanks,
-John

UPDATE after testing: Still issues

I verified on my mac that I could access and install packages on my network, eliminating my WIFI and service provider and isolating the issue to my PC and its settings.

  1. I added Rhino7.exe to:
    Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Defender Firewall\Allowed apps
leaving my Windows Security\ Firewall & Network Protection settings at default (on)

Package-Manager complains: "remote name could not be resolved: “yak.rhino3d.com”
image

  1. I then quit Rhino, turned off Microsoft Defender Firewall for domain network and restarted Rhino.
Package-manager now “runs”, but when installing a package, complains: "remote name could not be resolved: “files.mcneel.com”.

  1. looking at DNS error, I ran sever domains through nslookup with these results:

From my uninformed opinion, DNS seems to work but for some reason Rhino is not connecting.

I must be missing something, I just don’t know what…

This is a DNS error. It means that your computer can’t figure out the IP address for files.mcneel.com. You should be able to see a similar problem if you:

  1. Open Command Prompt
  2. Type nslookup files.mcneel.com and press Enter

Paste what you get back, here - my guess is you get “Unable to resolve hostname” or something similar. You’ll need to engage your IT team to figure out why name resolution isn’t working for you.

Hi @brian,
took a bit of time to get back to troubleshooting this. I had this result on April 10 (when it last failed):

Today I get essentially the same:

C:\Users\johnc> nslookup files.mcneel.com
Server: UnKnown
Address: 192.168.1.1

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: d22oc15na41ks6.cloudfront.net
Addresses: 18.64.236.81
18.64.236.52
18.64.236.107
18.64.236.100
Aliases: files.mcneel.com

Interestingly, without making any changes the download did succeed later in the day.
I was able to get the package installed, but I think I still have firewall and DNS issues.

since that team is me… I have some education coming my way!

Thank you for patiently working with me. It is appreciated, thanks!

HI @John_Colby Do u mind to share a bit more detail solution about how u solve the issue? I have the same issue and don’t know the exact soution u made. thanks in advance

Hi Ping, apologies for the delay in answering. (I don’t frequently visit the form and missed your message.

The solution for me: “Getting package manager to actually fetch”

the April 10 message lays out the steps to make it work. I did get success but only after some time.

try these steps:
Add Rhino7.exe to:
Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Defender Firewall\Allowed apps

turn off Microsoft Defender Firewall for domain network and restart Rhino

try it and see, but it took some time before it would successfully work. (I did continue to use my machine, both for modeling and email, but it did eventually work.

good luck in case you haven’t already made it work!
