Obj files are not importing the material texture maps. When I export an obj file from 3dcoat it creates a mtl file for the textures but Rhino doesn’t seem to read the textures when I import the file.
RM
Hi Roland - are the textures bitmaps on your disk? I believe the mtl file points at textures but does not contain them, so if the textures are available, try shoving copies in the same folder as the obj and see if that works any better.

Hi Pascal,
Yes they are in the same file folder as the model on my local disk. But the textures don’t exist as images per se they are 3d painted on the object in 3dcoat. If I export the model as .fbx file my model comes into Rhino textured, but with the obj format nothing. I’ll check into it more I wanted to see if anyone else was getting this problem. Unfortunately I don’t have V5 on this box to test.
Thanks for the quick reply,
RM
Roland,
In 3DCoat. File>Export Objects & Textures.
In the dialogue there you can choose which maps to export.
You will then get the .obj and .mtl file as well as the relevant maps as .jpgs (or whatever you choose in the dialogue)

Hi Steve,
I think I’m doing that, you mean from within the paint room in 3dcoat?
I click on the export and still no textures coming across in Rhino.
Fbx format works from the sculpt room, I guess textures are baked in the mesh in that format?
Thanks for your help,
RM
Roland,
I presume you are using per pixel painting rather than Ptex.
You should get a dialogue like this. Choose the maps you want.
Alternatively, you can go Textures>Export and you can choose to send out just the diffuse or normals etc. You can also export all layers as a PSD file
Steve
Hi Steve, Pascal,
First off thanks for such great support.
Yes I figured it was something I am doing there are so many options in 3dcoat on what to model with, ptex, surfaces, voxels. In my post I was modeling voxels and going straight to the paint room which for some reason doesn’t really make exportable textures, I checked using the psd export of the maps and all the layers in ps were empty.
I get great texture export if I model in microVertex then it’s automatic but for my currently modeled Voxel sculpts I have to figure out a way to get the ptex working better I can’t find the auto map button.
Thanks for your help,
RM
Hi Roland,
You can sculpt in voxels and paint using Ptex. However if you wish to use Per Pixel painting you need to do a detour via the UV room and then go to the paint room once you’ve applied the UVs. Then you are free to paint at whatever resolution you like and export maps to your hearts content.
Don’t forget that Ptex painting is assigning texture information to mesh faces and hence the resolution of your texture is entirely dependent on your mesh density. On the other hand with Per pixel painting you can have a high res texture on a low poly model. Depends on what you are trying to achieve.
Steve
Steve this is welcome information to me. I’m trying to get proficient in 3dcoat and all the options are overwhelming sometimes. Yes I’m looking more at high res textures to low poly model. I’m working on a video and need to really watch poly counts.
Thanks for the help,
