Numeric keyboard comma VS point

That still means a change in how current coordinate input works.

I often use w0. That would no longer be possible.

would you please e be so kind and explain what event handling means that i might get a different picture? all that tech babbles makes me go weird in my nuts

It is what a program does when a key is being pressed for instance. We could catch the specific numpad key press and pass on a . instead of a ,.

which would imply certain conditions i assume, making it under the circumstances when both are used like in the line command anyway impossible?

I don’t understand. Either you get the decimal period as decimal separator or the decimal comma. But from the same key event you can’t get both magically.

I know it doesn’t help much, but this is how I have it solved for myself:

Comma and period are just below right-hand home row.

Numpad layout for numbers I get holding the marked mint button with my left thumb

I don’t even have to move my hand to a numpad cluster. Even better than a physical numpad cluster.

i meant that in the same input area like for instance when you create a line, you can input values for coordinated and values for numbers.

i enter 50,100,20 for the start point then i want to enter 50,5 (as in decimal) for the length, now without having to enter all 3 numbers how would that be possible for Rhino to discern that this is a decimal and not a coordinate? making it actually impossible.

so what could be the solution here without switching . with , entirely?

i have followed your topic about this cyborg keyboard, its cool, but here my question is about improving keyboards if this in-between step (no criticism intended) to a neural link (or similar) is really necessary. nevertheless, separated as these parts now are maybe it could be an idea to reposition the keyboard to an ergonomically more appropriate location and not on a table in front of our body which generally has had its issues for maybe 3 centuries now? (like for instance on our chest which would be way more comfortable enabling us to lay in a spine exonerating position)

Right, as I was saying the decimal separator (!) would be dot from key numpad. But as you noted (and I said earlier) it’ll be either comma or dot, not both.

In the case of 50,100,20 it is not a decimal separator, it is a comma. Yes, they look the same. But on the numpad the decimal separator is the… decimal separator. If you want decimal separator to be typed at numpad then it will be that - in Rhino case that is the decimal dot.

You see that whichever you choose, you’ll have to make a decision.

Maybe you can feel a bit more equalized when you realize that US-keyboard users will always have to reach for the comma which is away from the numpad if they were to use the numpad for coordinate input. Or use the left hand to press the comma so the right hand can stay on the numpad - which is also what you could do.

With traditional keyboard layouts not much. They are awful in all respects and should be burnt on the fires of unergonomical solutions.

Agreed, I have them on my standing desk mount. The most ergonomical stance I know.

Not really, that forces your arm in awkward tensed bend position and

isn’t very healthy position to work in for prolonged time.

i have the feeling we are running in circles for pure exercise only with no actual goal. or maybe we are misunderstanding each other or we have the same opinion and it did not quite get into the context.

i use many many other applications, and i use the keayboard there as it there as it was designed, Rhino is the one and only software that does not allow me to use the num pad without brain numbing my muscle memories… any changes might have implications, most definitely a very positive one in that case.

well that makes it kind of clear why this debate is not going anwhere and is bloating the topic instead of solving it :vulcan_salute:

standing isnt really the better option either,

Prolonged standing can lead to physical issues such as

  • Heart conditions
  • Weak muscles
  • Joint pain
  • Varicose veins
  • Complicated pregnancy
  • Muscle fatigue, which can cause back pain

if you want to go into the philosophy of it nothing you do is actually healthy.

i found myself sleeping and resting quite comfortably in that position

I suggested, on another thread on the same topic, to implement the same option as SolidWorks do:

When the checkbox is unchecked, you can put any character in there. You simply hit whatever is on the numeric keypad on the right of the ā€œ0ā€ and that’s it, it will work.

Has someone here considered to buy a programmable keyboard or a dedicated numpad? I really support invariant decimal separation, just as I prefer SI units.

From personal experience this I can recommend, especially if you can fully control your keyboard key layout. Even better if you get to create macros.
