It would help if this dialog
could be closed with the ESC key. -
Create a layer with a sublayer. Turn off the parent layer. Make the (now invisible) sublayer active → The parent layer remains invisible, but nonetheless it is possible to draw on the sublayer.
In R7, the parent layer was turned on automatically, when a sublayer was made active.
