Moving Urban Furniture Blocks From Chosen Points

I am quite new to Rhino/Rhinolands, but have used a lot of SketchUp and blender in the past. My problem is when I make custom blocks for my landscape products, after insertion, I can move the block around precisely to lock onto other points. I’ve tried inserting multiple points manually within the block itself before exporting into the urban furniture library. But when I insert it as Urban Furniture, the points aren’t gripping points. The only grip I have is the insertion point. How is there a workaround? I really want to make the transition from SketchUp, but this is a major hurdle, which I’m guessing has a very simple fix. I just cant seem to find it.

Hi,

Those points won’t become extra grips for the Urban Furniture object. In Rhino, the reliable way to do this is not to drag the object by custom grips, but to use object snaps with the Move command.

Turn on the relevant Osnaps, especially Point, End, Mid, or Vertex. Then select the Urban Furniture object, run Move, pick the desired reference point on/in the block as the “from” point, and pick the target point as the “to” point. Rhino’s Move command is point-to-point: it asks for a point to move from and then a point to move to.

If you want a permanent default handle/anchor, edit the block and change its base point / insertion point with BlockEdit → Set Base Point. Rhino’s documentation describes this as repositioning the block insertion point, and the instance shifts so the new insertion point is placed at the block insertion location.

If you need several different placement anchors, make several versions of the block with different base points, or insert it as a regular Rhino block instead of Urban Furniture. Lands Design has an option to insert library blocks as Urban Furniture; otherwise they are inserted as regular blocks.

So the workaround is: use Osnap + Move for arbitrary snap-based placement, and use BlockEdit / Set Base Point when you want to redefine the main insertion grip. Extra point objects inside the block can be snap targets, but they are not additional Urban Furniture grips

Thank you for replying.

The move command doesn’t allow me to snap to anything other than the origin point. I have Osnap on and all point, end, vertex, etc are on. And because its urban furniture, its not a block instance as such, so it cant be edited.

I wanted to keep it as urban furniture for the means of having the urban furniture list, for quantities, costs, etc on my page automatically.

I’m surprised something so basic has me strung up so badly.

Hi @Honour_Bound_Landsca, you are right. This is a bug in Lands Design. When blocks are inserted as Urban Furniture objects, the osnaps seem to be ignored. We will fix this as soon as possible and inform you about it.

Thank you so much. I thought it was just me.

That would be great if you could let me know when this is fixed. It seems to make it unusable on my end without it.
