Technically it is easy – if you know all the secrets. Figuring those out, is the hard part.

This is an example of one of those times I attempted to reveal all the secrets for the sake of getting Rhino into the realm of high precision reverse engineering capability:

I have some ideas about this type of technology that are very refined from very extensive experience. I’ll try to boil it down very simply here: 1.) The best 3D capture is always one that is taken from a very stable position – regardless of how motion friendly the implications are, i.e. “hand-held-scanners”. The common ‘dream’ of scanning objects where the scanner is constantly moving around and expected to capture ‘everything’ accurately and patch it all together flawlessly – is a false hope…

Trimming, Aligning, and then Merging, of multiple scans – is key.

Trimming away erroneous data is very important. This erroneous data is what causes alignment errors down the line. Most software I’ve seen and ideologies I’ve seen, will disregard this fact.

You’ll notice these errors build up over time, especially with the ‘auto align’ ‘auto decimate’ ‘auto merge’ ideologies of most hand held scanning processes.
