Modeling an architectureal ornament (Muqarnas)

Hello everybody,

What would be the best way to model complicated architectural ornaments such as “Muqarnas”

What I can think of is that the process would be divided into 3 stages:

  1. Drawing a specific 2D shape to be the base plan of your unit (it doesn’t have to be exactly like the picture, I can design my own shape, just using the same concept).

  2. Converting that 2d shape into 3D, and this wouldn’t be a simple task as it’s not just and extrusion. If i modeled that in 3DS Max I would use a lot of solid editing and subtraction.

3.Arraying the 3d shape, which also wouldn’t be easy since it’s not rectangular or radial

Thanks for your help in advance

You can try this site. The creator is a professor in Turkey, so muqarnas are a “local specialty”. A lot of useful tips in general.

thx a lot, awesome site, very useful. Do you know any other sites or tutorials to familiarize you with really complicated 3d modelling/free form modelling in Grasshopper?

The best thing I can do is to direct you to the Grasshopper Tutorial page.
