Making a selection italic

I don’t know if you can influence this as discourse developers but when I have a sentence written and want to italicize one word I fail when doing this:

double-click word
Ctrl+I

the result is *word * (not italic) because the trailing space was also selected.
what I want is word (i.e. *word*)
