I see you have Project turned on in the Osnap panel, is it possible you are snapping to something in 3D that you don’t realize because you are working in Front view?

The SmartTrack point you set at the top, at the end of the blue line - right before you make the last line - is used as the “distance track point”, so that your 8” distance is measured from the point, not from the starting point. You can tell by the distance showing up in the smart track “tool tip box”.
